Why Some of the Richest Men in the World Don’t Use an iPhone

Android holds around 72% of the mobile operating system market share around the world, according to StatCounter. Apple is in second place with almost 27% of the market share. With these statistics, it’s no wonder the richest men in the world don’t use an iPhone.

The iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones in the world, but it’s not the only game in town. A number of other high-end smartphones are available, and some of the richest men in America prefer to use them, while others don’t.

So why not use an iPhone?

So why not use an iPhone?

There are a few reasons why some of the richest men in America might not use iPhones. Perhaps they may prefer the features and functionality of other smartphones. For example, some high-end Android phones have features that iPhones don’t, such as expandable storage and the ability to sideload apps.

Sideloading an app is the process of installing an app on your device from a source other than an official app store, such as the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. This can be done for a variety of reasons, such as to install apps that are not available in your region, to install apps that have been modified by the developer, or to install apps that are not approved by the app store for security reasons.

Secondly, some of these men are well known public figures, and may be fairly privacy-conscientious. Being wealthy means having more information to keep secure. Apple has been criticized for its data collection practices, and some people believe that other smartphone companies are more privacy-friendly. Whether they are or not is debatable.

Some of these rich guys may simply prefer to use different brands. They may have a personal preference for Android or BlackBerry, or they may be loyal to a particular brand because of its history or reputation.  Maybe they just don’t feel the need for a smartphone and prefer a basic feature phone.

Of course, not all of the richest men in America use non-iPhones. Some of them actually do use iPhones, and there are a number of reasons why they might choose to do so. For example, they may be fans of Apple’s products, or they may find that the iPhone is the best phone for their needs. It might just be an easier user friendly interface for them to learn.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to use an iPhone is a personal one. There are a number of factors that people may consider when making this decision, and there is no right or wrong answer.

  • Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms, uses a Samsung Android phone (although rumor has it that he receives free iPhones, and potentially uses both)
  • Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, used a Motorola flip phone, until 2020 when he switched to an iPhone.
  • Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, uses a Bill Gates currently uses the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. He was gifted the phone by Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-Yong when he visited South Korea in January 2023.
  • Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, uses a variety of phones, including a BlackBerry and a Samsung Galaxy, as well as the iPhone.
  • Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, owns 3 phones, a Samsung S22, an unknown iPhone, and a flip phone. But primarily uses the Samsung S22.

Why do these rich men use non-iPhones?

Mark Zuckerberg has been using Samsung smartphones for several years. In a 2021 interview with MKBHD, he said that he is a fan of Samsung phones and thinks they build great phones. He also said that he uses Android because it is the most popular mobile operating system in the world.

The specific Samsung phone that Zuckerberg uses today is not publicly known, but it is likely one of the latest models, such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra or the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Zuckerberg has been seen using both of these phones in public.

Zuckerberg’s choice of smartphone is interesting because he is the CEO of Facebook, which is a major competitor to Google. Google’s Pixel phones are among the most popular Android phones on the market, but Zuckerberg has chosen not to use one.

This may be because he prefers the hardware and software of Samsung phones, or it may be because he wants to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.

Bill Gates uses a Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 because he finds it to be a very versatile and productive device. The foldable design allows him to use it as both a phone and a tablet, which gives him a lot of flexibility in how he works.

He can use the phone mode for quick tasks like checking emails and making calls, and then unfold it into tablet mode when he needs more screen space for things like working on documents or watching videos.

In an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin, Mr. Gates said that the integration between Android and Microsoft’s software were a primary reason he used them. “I actually use an Android phone because I want to keep track of everything, I’ll often play around with iPhones, but the one I carry around happens to be Android”.

The Android phone that Mark Cuban uses is a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. He has said that he likes the Galaxy S22 Ultra because it is “powerful” and “has a great camera.” He also uses the Galaxy S22 Ultra to test out new apps that he is interested in investing in.

Cuban only uses an iPhone to keep in touch with other family & friends who use iPhones.

Whatever the reasons, their choice of smartphone is a good reminder that even the most powerful people in the tech industry are still just consumers. They have their own preferences and opinions, just like everyone else
